Walt Disney Autographed
Song of the South World Premiere Program

-Plus Related Premiere Items

-From the Family of "Song of the South" Author Joel Chandler Harris

An extremely rare original "Song of the South" World Premiere program personally autographed by Walt Disney.  The film premiered on November 12, 1946, at the Fox Theater in Atlanta.  Walt Disney personally introduced the movie, and also attended a special luncheon and reception in honor of the movie's premiere.  The daughter of "Song of the the South" author Joel Chandler Harris attended these events and sat at Walt Disney's table during the luncheon.  During the movie's premiere festivities Walt Disney autographed the cover of the program in blue fountain pen.  This program comes to me directly from the family and includes two invitations addressed to Joel Chandler Harris's daughter.  This is rare provenance (supporting documentation) you won't find anywhere else:

-An email from the great great granddaughter of Joel Chandler Harris regarding this collection.

--A November 7, 1946 typed letter inviting Joel Chandler Harris's daughter (Mrs. Fritz Wagner) to the SONG OF THE SOUTH World Premiere luncheon at the same table as Walt Disney.

-A seating chart for the World Premiere Luncheon, with the names of Walt Disney and cast members and the other VIP attendees written to show their seating positions.

-An engraved invitation "To meet Mr. and Mrs. Walt Disney, Hollywood stars, and other distinguished guests" at an Atlanta Georgia reception hosted by the Uncle Remus Memorial Associaton.

-The November 10, 1946 "The Atlanta Journal Magazine" with a two page story promoting the World Premiere to be held two days later.  Some edge tears and minor tape on this Sunday newspaper supplement.

-And of course, the "Song of the South" world premiere program, personlly autographed by Walt Disney.

-Also includes the Phil Sears Collectibles Lifetime Guarantee of Authenticity.

"Song of the South" takes place in the American south during the reconstruction era shortly after the end of the civil war and the abolition of slavery.  The story follows 7-year-old Johnny (Booby Driscoll) who is visiting his grandmother's plantation.  Johnny befriends Uncle Remus (James Baskett), one of the workers on the plantation, and takes joy in hearing his tales about the adventures of Brer (brother) Rabbit, Brer Fox, and Brer Bear.  Unlce Remus's stories contain lesson that help Johnny cope with the challenges he is experiencing living on the plantation.  The movie earned two Oscars: James Baskett received an Honorary Academy Award for his performance as Uncle Remus, and the unforgettable Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" also won the 1947 Oscar for Best Song.

The program is large, measuring 13" x 9.5".  Nearly invisible, there is archival tape on the last page reinforcing where cover staples are pulling free; otherwise very fine condition.  Walt Disney's autograph and fantastic archive of rare "Song of the South" World Premiere items... from the family of the author- so rare!  Item # 9931
