A Museum-Worthy Collection From Young Walt Disney

Seven items given by 16 or 17 year old Walt Disney to girlfriend Beatrice Conover while Walt served in France for the Red Cross at the close of WWI. Walt Disney’s relationship with Beatrice Conover is chronicled in Neal Gabler's book, "WALT DISNEY - THE TRIUMPH OF THE AMERICAN IMAGINATION." Gabler refers to her as Walt’s girlfriend and eventual heartbreaker. He reports that Walt kept her letters and bought her blouses and perfume in Paris, only to be devastated upon his return by news that she had married (when in fact she hadn’t).  Included in this lot:

-A photograph of Walt Disney which Walt Disney has signed and inscribed "What you looking so sad about Walt-?"  On the reverse he has written "View from Point St. Cloud just outside of Parie" (sic).  According to an included letter from Disney historian David Lesjak, Chateau de St. Cloud was a Red Cross facility during the war;

-A postcard of Chapelle St-Louis in Vittel on which Walt has drawn a man and an airplane and written "Hello Bee."  Dating from no later than 1919, this is one of the earliest Walt Disney drawings ever to be offered for public sale.  An included letter from Disney historian David Lesjak states that hospital in Vittel was one of Walt Disney’s Red Cross workplaces;

-A postcard of a woman using her skirt to dry tears on which Walt has written "In America one would think this an immorlal (sic) picture but it is a common ordinary post-carde in France. ‘Some Chicken’";

-A postcard of a woman dressed only in undergarments with Walt’s writing "’Another one- ’some doll";

-A postcard of a woman and the town of Strassburg (no writing).  An included letter from historian Lesjak tells of how at times young Disney was used by the Red Cross as a tour guide for military personnel, and a priest told Walt which sights to show them. "They wanted to see Strasbourg (sic)... so I took them all around... word got around that that fellow Disney was a great guide." I was in Strasbourg (sic) on the first 14th of July (Bastille Day) that was celebrated in 50 years..." Walt would have purchased this card on one of those sightseeing trips;

-A postcard of a woman riding an artillery shell (no writing);

-A Red Cross postcard of American Troops marching through Paris (no writing). Historian David Lesjak says in an included letter the postcard scene would have reminded Walt Disney of the military parade he witnessed when Woodrow Wilson visited Paris.

The authenticity of these artifacts is extensively documented.  These very items are pictured on pages 55, 56, 61, 62 and 87 of the book "In the Service of the Red Cross: Walt Disney's Early Adventures: 1918 - 1919" by David Lesjak.   Provenance: This lot includes 4 letters from David R. Smith, Walt Disney Studio Archives Director Emeritus, discussing the historical context of these items and their rarity, 7 letters about the importance of these items from David Lesjak, Disney historian/author/Consultant-Special Projects, Walt Disney Family Museum, and a letter of authenticity from noted Disney Autograph expert Phil Sears, Phil Sears Collectibles LLC, noting his ownership of this collection.  The Disney history book "In the Service of the Red Cross: Walt Disney's Early Adventures: 1918 - 1919" by David Lesjak is also included; these exact items are pictured in the book.   This collection is literally "one for the Disney history books."

Postcards measure approximately 4" x 6".  The photo of Walt Disney is a wallet-size photograph measuring approximately 3.75" x 2".  All items in very good condition as shown.  All SEVEN items from Walt Disney plus TWELVE letters of authenticity AND the book telling the history of these amazing "museum pieces," item # 6815C, $24,950
