Walt Disney Signed Letter Written three months after the grand opening of Disneyland in 1955, Walt Disney thanks famous artist Dean Cornwell for naming him to the Distinguished Society of Sir Walter Raleigh. The honor-- likely tongue-in-cheek-- was associated with the Sir Walter Raleigh bar at New York's Warwick Hotel. The bar was decorated with murals by Cornwell of Sir Raleigh, Queen Elizabeth I, English colonists, and Native Americans. Comissioned by William Randolph Hearst in 1937, the deal between Hearst and the artist soured, and in response Cornwell added some obscene elements to the artwork. As a result, curtains covered sensitive parts of the murals for decades. The murals and room still exist today as the Murals on 54 restaurant in NYC and are considered culturally important-- and a great conversation starter! Dean Cornwell, often celebrated as “The Dean of Illustrators,” was a leading American artist whose dynamic oil paintings shaped the visual culture of the early 20th century. Born in 1892 in Louisville, Kentucky, he rose to prominence through his richly detailed illustrations for major magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post, Cosmopolitan, and Harper’s Bazaar. Cornwell developed a bold, narrative-driven style that also translated into large-scale murals commissioned for public and civic spaces across the United States. His work—spanning commercial art, wartime posters, and monumental murals—cemented his legacy as one of America’s most influential illustrators .This letter is personally
signed by Walt Disney in bold thick fountain pen ink. Letter is in very
fine condition with usual mailing folds. Letter measures approx.
10.5" x 7.25". As a bonus, the original personalized Walt Disney
