BAMBI Original 1942 Production Cel
BAMBI... a true Walt Disney classic! In
2008 the American Film Institute announced "Ten Top Ten"—the
best ten films in ten "classic" American film
genres- and Bambi was
acknowledged as the third best film in the animation genre.
This beautiful handpainted cel of Bambi and his friend
Thumper was actually photographed in the making of the classic motion picture.
But that's not all-- this cel is personally
autographed by Walt Disney!
Walt Disney has
signed in reddish-brown crayon: It's likely this piece was given to Evan K. Shaw, a prominent 1940s-1950s
ceramic figure manufacturer
Walt Disney signed original art like this as gifts for VIPs. After the production of an animated motion picture in the 1940s, a small number of the very best character poses were sent to the Disney Studio Art Props Department or the Courvoisier Gallery (Disney's official distributor of cels offered for purchase). Craftspeople carefully trimmed off the blank area of the cels from around the characters, affixed them to an airbrushed background, and sometimes also created airbrused cel elements (like the forest floor foreground of this piece) to compliment the scene. Some of these gift cels were given without being signed, others were signed by Disney employees on Walt's behalf, and a very small number-- like this piece-- were personally autographed by Walt Disney!
Cel paint is flaking, especially on
Thumper (click image of cel for a closer look); orginal adhesive outline showing on background. This framed piece
measures approximately 17.5 " x 17" overall.
