Walt Disney Thanks Disneyland's First Horse Wrangler...
The only actual resident family of the Disney Studio and Disneyland!

A decade before Disneyland opened, Owen and Dolly Pope showed horses at fairs throughout California, and the crowds especially loved their miniature horses. In 1950, Disney designer Harper Goff recommended that Walt Disney see their show as well... thinking they might come in handy for the little amusement park Walt hoped to build adjacent to the Disney Studio in Burbank. Eventually Walt hired the Popes and moved them to the Walt Disney Studio in Burbank.  Other than military personnel billeted there during World War II, the Popes are the only people to have ever lived at the Studio. Owen built stalls for 10 horses and he and Dolly lived in a trailer at the Studio for the next 2 years. Walt, the former polo player, would visit them often to chat about the horses and his plans for Disneyland.

During the construction of Disneyland, when farm houses and other "native" structures were being moved from the property, Owen and Dolly were given their choice of the houses.  The house they chose was moved to the 10-acre "Pony Farm" backstage at Disneyland, which would go on to be the Circle D Corral that still serves as home to the Disneyland horses today.  The Popes went from being the only couple to live at the Disney Studio to the only couple to live full time at Disneyland.

During the construction of the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, Owen built the harness and riggings for the WDW horses while at Disneyland. In January 1971, he and Dolly moved to Florida, where Owen helped establish the Tri-Circle-D Ranch.
A few years later, in September 1975, Dolly became the first Walt Disney World Resort cast member to retire, followed by Owen in October.

In this personally signed letter written eight months before Disneyland's opening, Walt thanks Dolly Pope for Christmas gifts.  Walt Disney sends the letter via studio messenger to Dolly Pope's trailer home at the Disney Studio.  The letter is in very fine condition with the original mailing folds, and includes the original envelope engraved with Walt Disney's name and the studio address.  Includes the Phil Sears Collectibles Lifetime Guarantee of Authenticity.  Also includes an 8" x 10" color photograph suitable for framing.  Item # 7714
