Walt Disney Signed Smoke Tree Ranch Certificate

An interesting piece for a bargain price! 

The private neighborhood community of Smoke Tree Ranch was Walt Disney’s beloved sanctuary in Palm Springs. He owned two properties there over the years, financed community projects, and famously wore the ranch's "STR" logo on his neckties— a detail still visible on the Partners statues in Disneyland and WDW's Magic Kingdom.  Walt purchased his first Smoke Tree Ranch cottage in the 1930s to escape and recharge. In 1954, he sold his first ranch house to help fund the construction of Disneyland in Anaheim. Following the park's success, Walt purchased a second, larger property on the ranch in 1957 and built Disney Hall as a gift to the Smoke Tree community.

Swimmning, lawn bowling and horseback riding were popular activities at Smoke Tree Ranch.  A subset of the horseback riders were admitted entry into Smoke Tree Ranch's exclusive Caterpillr Club... riders who were thrown from their horses and the indignity was witnessed by other accredited members!  This certificate, signed by Walt Disney as President of the Club, duly admits resident William H. Hart into the Smoke Tree Ranch Caterpillar Club:  

 

SMOKE TREE RANCH CATERPILLAR CLUB

This will certify that William H. Hart has been duly unseated and deposited on the ground by his mount, in the presence of qualified witnesses who have sworn to the authenticity of the proceedings; and that he has met the requirements of this organization by being thrown in the correct manner, viz.: forward, over the neck of the mount, backward, over the rump of the mount, or on either side with said mount in forward motion, running or walking, or in vertical motion accompanied by twisting and turning, commonly known as bucking. It is also certified that the above named was completely surprised, by thus qualifying for membership; and, according to reliable witnesses did not fall from his mount deliberately for the express purpose of gaining admission to this exclusive organization.
The certificate is signed by two resident witnesses and is additionally signed by Walt Disney as President of the club in green ballpoint ink.  Dated March 14, 1957, the certificate is emblazoned in three places with the stylistic STR logo. 

The certificate is both brittle and very faded.  An edge tear, approx. 1" long, on top margin; two areas of glue residue on reverse; a small area of paper loss in top left blank margin.  Please see the images and descriptions above.  Walt Disney's signature is bold and dark.  Certificate measures 8.5" x 11".
