Walt Disney Autographed Rose Bowl Program Page

The theme of "It's a Small World" was appropriate when Walt Disney was chosen as Grand Marshal of the 1966 Pasadena Rose Parade.  I always tell Disney collectors that an autograph is so much more enjoyable when the history of how it was obtained has been preserved.  Included with this wonderful pair of autographs of Walt Disney and Art Linkletter is an email from the original recipient:

I got both Walt Disney's autograph and Art Linkletter's autograph on the same day. It was New Year's Day, and Walt Disney was the Grand Marshall of the Rose parade in Pasadena. I attended school across the street from a military facility which is at the end of the Rose Parade route... I was standing right next to the military center's driveway, when Walt Disney's car pulled into the facility. I wanted his autograph, so I went to the place where I could get in.... I was only 10 and ran all over that facility to find a piece of white paper, so I could have Walt Disney sign it.

When I got back there was a line of people standing there to get Walt's signature. When I got to the head of the line, I handed Mr. Disney that little piece of white paper. He turned around and saw that I had the official Rose Parades magazine. He ripped it out of my hand, signed it and gave it back to me...I ran out of that room screaming "I got Walt Disney's signature." When I walked out of that facility I walked around the corner, and Art Linkletter was getting off the float that he had taken in the Rose Parade. And then I said, "can I have your autograph", and he gave it to me..."

Walt Disney and Art Linkletter were close personal friends and their families socialized together.  Walt Disney introduced Linkletter's popular book, "Kids Say the Darndest Things."  Linkletter was Walt's choice for Disneyland's opening day Master of Cermonies job, but the design and construction of the park left Walt with little cash.  So Linkletter accepted union scale for the job... and the exclusive rights to the camera and film concessions at Disneyland for the next 10 years!
